What to pack for IRONMAN 70.3 Muncie

IRONMAN 70.3 Muncie is a single-transition 70.3 you seed yourself — North-American format, so there are no coloured bags. You rack your own bike and kit at Prairie Creek Reservoir, your bike goes in the day before and stays overnight, and you bring your own gear bag on race morning. Here's how to group your kit by leg, when bike check-in closes, and how race morning runs.

The layout, bags and check-in shape come from the race calendar and don't change year to year. Exact times are confirmed from the 2026 athlete guide.
how the race is laid out

A single transition, in two places.

Swim, bike and run all turn through one transition at Prairie Creek Reservoir — you come back to the same rack between disciplines, and the run finishes at the reservoir right there. There are no coloured bags to pack and nothing is moved across town: you lay your kit out at your own rack space.

T1 / T2 · one transitionPrairie Creek ReservoirSwim exit, bike out, then bike in and run out — all at your own rack. Your bike and run kit are both laid out here.

This is a self-seeded single transition: you set up your own spot, no volunteer moves your kit, and there are no blue, red or white bags. Group what you need for each leg and lay it out at your rack the way you'll reach for it — bike kit first, run kit behind it.
what to pack

Your kit, leg by leg.

There's no IRONMAN colour-to-bag scheme here — it's a North-American self-transition. Think in legs, not bags: group your kit for the bike and the run, and bring your own gear bag for the dry clothes you arrive in.

You bring your own bag on race morning. Empty it at your rack, lay out your gear, then store the bag under your bike — nothing is moved to the finish.
+What you carry to the water (not in a bag): wetsuit if you're wearing one, goggles, timing chip on your left ankle, and the marked swim cap from your race packet. Everything else is already laid out at your rack, and your gear bag is stored under your bike.
check-in & the clock

Your bike goes in the night before.

Muncie runs a mandatory day-before bike check-in at Prairie Creek Reservoir with the bike racked overnight — bikes are not allowed into transition on race morning, so there's no race-morning check-in to fall back on. You collect your timing chip at Athlete Check-In, not at the bike rack.

common questions

Muncie, answered.

Does Muncie use coloured bags?

No. Muncie is a North-American self-transition 70.3, so there's no blue / red / white bag system. You set up your own rack space and lay out your kit yourself — group it by leg rather than packing it into colour-coded bags.

Do I bring my own gear bag?

Yes. You bring your own gear bag on race morning — any bag that fits your rack space. You empty it, lay your kit out, and store the bag under your bike. Nothing is collected or moved to the finish, so leave valuables with a supporter.

Do I have to check my bike in the day before?

Yes. Bike check-in is mandatory and day-before, on Friday from 10:00 to 17:00, and your bike is racked overnight. Bikes are not permitted into transition on race morning, so there is no race-morning bike check-in.

What time does bike check-in close?

Bike check-in closes Friday at 17:00, the day before the race. This is confirmed from the 2026 athlete guide, not last year's provisional time. Plan to have your bike racked and your rack space sorted before then.

What are the cut-offs?

You have 8 hours 30 minutes overall, with the course closing at 15:00. The swim closes 1:10 after the final athlete starts, the bike 5:30 after, with an intermediate bike cut-off at Mile 27.7 and a run cut-off at Mile 6.55. Each transition closes 10 minutes after its discipline's cut-off.

Is Muncie wetsuit-legal?

It's a wetsuit-optional race depending on water temperature. Above 76.1 °F / 24.5 °C the wetsuit is optional, and athletes who wear one start behind the non-wetsuit swimmers and aren't eligible for age-group awards or World Championship slots. Check the race-morning call before you zip up.
