What to pack for IRONMAN Kalmar

IRONMAN Kalmar is a single-transition 140.6 on Sweden's Baltic coast — you rack at one transition on Kvarnholmen, with colour-coded bags for the bike and the run plus mid-course personal-needs bags, and your bike goes in the night before. The swim is in the Kalmarsund, the run finishes on Stortorget, and here's exactly what goes in each bag.

The layout, bags and check-in shape come from the race calendar and don't change year to year. Exact times are confirmed from the 2026 athlete guide.
how the race is laid out

A single transition, in two places.

Swim, bike and run all turn through one transition on Kvarnholmen — you come back to the same rack between disciplines, and the run finishes a short way off on Stortorget in the old town. Your kit waits for you at that one spot; only the white bag is moved to the finish.

T1 / T2 · one transitionKvarnholmenSwim exit, bike out, then bike in and run out — all at the same rack. Your blue and red bags are both here.
finishStortorgetRun finish on the old-town square. Your white bag meets you here.
With one transition you return to the same rack twice, so there's less to track than a point-to-point. What you pack matters more than where it goes: the two crossings of the exposed Öland bridge can make for a windy bike, so pack the blue bag for weather and plan for a long day.
what to pack

Three bags, by colour.

IRONMAN's colour-to-bag scheme is the same across European races, so this part is settled. Pack each bag for the discipline it powers. On a full there are also personal-needs bags for the bike and run — mid-course aid you hand in on race morning and collect at the marked points out on course.

check-in & the clock

Your bike goes in the night before.

Kalmar runs a mandatory day-before bike check-in at the Kvarnholmen transition with the bike racked overnight — there's no race-morning bike check-in to fall back on. The shape of that is fixed, and this year's exact minute is confirmed.

How the morning typically runs.

The choreography barely moves year to year — transition opens early, the white bag goes in on the way to the start, then the rolling, self-seeded swim start in the Kalmarsund. The order is what matters.

common questions

Kalmar, answered.

What colour bag is the bike bag at Kalmar?

The blue bag is your bike / T1 bag — helmet, bike shoes, sunglasses, race belt and ride nutrition. It's racked with your bike at the Kvarnholmen transition the day before.

Do I have to check my bike in the day before?

Yes. Bike check-in is mandatory and day-before, with the bike racked overnight at Kvarnholmen. There is no race-morning bike check-in, so don't plan to bring it on the day.

How many bags do I pack?

Three main bags — blue for the bike, red for the run, white for morning clothes — plus optional personal-needs bags for the bike and run. It's a single transition, so blue and red both sit at the one rack; the white bag is moved from the start to the finish for you.

Do I need personal-needs bags for the bike and run?

On a full you can. Bike and run personal-needs bags hold mid-course aid — extra nutrition, a spare tube, salt — that you hand in on race morning and collect at the marked personal-needs points out on course. They're optional, but most athletes use at least the bike one.

What time does bike check-in close?

Bike check-in closes 18:00 on Friday, the day before. This is confirmed from the 2026 athlete guide, not last year's provisional time. Have your bike racked and your blue and red bags dropped before then — you can still add drink and nutrition on race morning.

Anything Kalmar-specific to pack?

Plan for the Öland bridge crossings: the bike leg crosses the exposed bridge twice, so arm warmers or a light gilet in the blue bag pay off if the wind is up. Mid-August on the Baltic is mild but the sound can be breezy — a warm dry layer in the white bag makes the finish on Stortorget better.
