What to pack for IRONMAN 70.3 Versailles

IRONMAN 70.3 Versailles is a single-transition 70.3 in the grounds of the Château de Versailles — you rack once on the Allée des Mortemets, with colour-coded bags for the bike and the run, and your bike goes in the day before. The swim is in the Pièce d'Eau des Suisses, the finish is on the Avenue de Paris, and here's exactly what goes in each bag.

The layout, bags and check-in shape come from the race calendar and don't change year to year. Exact times are confirmed from the 2026 athlete guide.
how the race is laid out

A single transition, in two places.

Bike and run turn through one transition on the Allée des Mortemets — you come back to the same rack between disciplines. But the day is spread across the grounds: the swim is in the Pièce d'Eau des Suisses, and the finish is on the Avenue de Paris, roughly a 35-minute walk from the rack. Your white bag bridges the start and the finish for you.

T1 / T2 · one transitionAllée des Mortemets (Château de Versailles)Bike out, then bike in and run out — all at the same rack. Your blue and red bags are both here. There's a long run from the swim exit to the bike start before T1.
finishAvenue de ParisRun finish at the village on the Avenue de Paris, about a 35-minute walk from transition. Your white bag is moved here.
One rack keeps the bike and run kit simple, but the swim, the transition and the finish sit at three different points in the grounds. Anything you want at the finish has to go in the white bag at the swim start — there's no nipping back to the rack, which is a long walk away. T1 also runs long: you cover a stretch on foot from the water to the bike with your wetsuit still on. Pack to the bag.
what to pack

Three bags, by colour.

IRONMAN's colour-to-bag scheme is the same across European 70.3s, so this part is settled. Pack each bag for the discipline it powers — and for a warm, long mid-July day in the Chevreuse Valley.

Dropped next to the swim start on race morning, up to 07:35; moved to the after-finish area on the Avenue de Paris so dry clothes meet you there.
+What you carry to the water (not in a bag): wetsuit, goggles, your timing chip on the left ankle, and the official swim cap from your race pack — your own cap isn't allowed in the swim. The Pièce d'Eau des Suisses is calm and shelves quickly to depth, so there's no warm-up in the water. Keep the wetsuit on for the long run to the bike; lower the top to your waist if you need to. Everything else has gone into the bags above.
check-in & the clock

Your bike goes in the night before.

Versailles runs a mandatory day-before bike check-in on the Allée des Mortemets with the bike and transition bags racked overnight — there's no race-morning bike check-in to fall back on. Bike and bags check-in runs Saturday afternoon and closes at 19:00, and it's where you collect your timing chip.

race morning

How the morning typically runs.

The choreography barely moves year to year — transition opens at 06:00, the white street bag goes in at the swim start by 07:35, the bike park closes at 07:00, then the rolling swim start in the Pièce d'Eau des Suisses. The order is what matters.

common questions

Versailles, answered.

What colour bag is the bike bag at Versailles?

The blue bag is your bike / T1 bag — helmet, bib on a race belt, bike shoes, sunglasses and ride nutrition. It's racked with your bike on the Allée des Mortemets the day before, and you use it to stow your wetsuit and swim kit in T1.

Where do my street clothes go if the finish isn't at transition?

Your white street-wear bag is dropped at the swim start and moved to the finish on the Avenue de Paris, where you collect it in the after-finish area. You can leave it until 07:35 on race morning. The rack itself is about a 35-minute walk from the finish, so the white bag is how dry clothes reach you.

Do I have to check my bike in the day before?

Yes. Bike check-in is mandatory and day-before, with the bike and transition bags racked overnight on the Allée des Mortemets. Bike and bags check-in closes at 19:00 on Saturday, and there is no race-morning bike check-in — so don't plan to bring it on the day.

How many bags do I pack?

Three: blue for the bike, red for the run, white for street wear. It's a single transition, so blue and red both sit at the one rack; the white bag is moved from the swim start to the finish for you.

What's the swim like, and what's the long T1?

The 1.9 km swim is in the calm Pièce d'Eau des Suisses at the foot of the Château, with a self-seeded rolling start. T1 then has a long stretch on foot from the swim exit to the bike — keep your wetsuit on through it, lowering the top to your waist if you want, and peel it off at your rack.

What should I pack for the bike?

The 90 km loops the Chevreuse Valley with around 772 m of climbing — punchy hills like the Côte de la Vacheresse and the 17 Tournants rather than long mountain passes. Pack ride nutrition and sunscreen in the blue bag, with light gloves for the faster descents on a warm July day.
