What to pack for IRONMAN 70.3 New York
IRONMAN 70.3 New York is a single-transition 70.3 you seed yourself on Jones Beach Island. North-American format, and leaner than most: there is no coloured-bag system and no gear bag is issued at check-in at all. You rack your own bike and kit at Field 5, the bike goes in on Friday and stays overnight, and you bring whatever bag you like on race morning. Note the day — this one races on a Saturday.
A single transition, in two places.
Swim, bike and run all turn through one transition at Jones Beach Field 5 on Zach's Bay, and the run finishes there too. You come back to the same rack between every discipline, nothing is moved for you, and no bag is collected — so everything you need is either on you or laid out at your rack.
Your kit, leg by leg.
There is no colour-to-bag scheme and no bag in your race packet. Think in legs: group your bike kit and your run kit, lay them out at your own rack space, and bring your own bag for the clothes you arrive in.
- Running shoes
- Run cap or visor
- Run nutritiongels
- Anti-chafe balm
- Electrolytes
- Warm dry layersea breeze
- Flip-flops or sandals
- Small towel
- Pre-swim throwaway top
- Phone + keys pouch
Your bike goes in the night before.
Jones Beach runs a mandatory bike check-in on Friday with the bike racked overnight — bikes are not permitted into transition on race morning. There is an optional earlier bike check-in on Thursday if you would rather not queue, and a pre-event swim on Friday from 12:00 to 16:00.
The 2026 official guide is in. The times below are now confirmed for this edition — a few moved from last year.
How the morning typically runs.
Parking opens at 04:30 and transition runs 05:30 to 07:00. Pro men start at 06:55 and the age-group start follows at 07:00 — so transition shuts as the race begins. Give yourself the full hour and a half: this is a Saturday race and the causeway traffic builds.
Wantagh, answered.
Is a gear bag provided at IRONMAN 70.3 New York?
No. No gear bag is issued at Athlete Check-In — the race packet is bib, stickers, swim cap, wristband and your bike check-out ticket. You are responsible for bringing your own bag on race morning, and nothing is collected or moved to the finish.
What day does IRONMAN 70.3 New York race?
It races on Saturday 26 September 2026, not the usual Sunday. Mandatory bike check-in is the day before, on Friday, which makes Thursday's optional bike check-in worth considering if you are travelling in.
What time does bike check-in close?
Mandatory bike check-in closes Friday at 19:30, and the bike is racked overnight. Athlete Check-In closes slightly earlier at 19:00, and all race packets must be picked up by then. Both are confirmed from the 2026 athlete guide.
What are the cut-offs?
You have 8 hours 30 minutes overall from when the last athlete enters the water, with the swim closing 1:10 and the bike 5:30 after the final start — durations, not clock times. The guide states three as times of day: end of bike lap 1 (Mile 28) at 12:00, bike Aid Station 3 (Mile 40) at 13:00, and the run lap 1 / finish split (Mile 7) at 15:30.
When do I get my bike back?
Bike and gear check-out runs 13:30 to 17:00 on race day at Field 5. You will need the bike check-out ticket from your race packet, so keep it somewhere dry rather than in the bag you leave at the rack.
This is the shared guide. Make it yours.
